Lhamo Thondup was born on 6th July 1935, in a cowshed to a farmer's family in Taktser, China, northeast of Tibet. His was a humble family of farmers and he was one of the 16 children to his parents. He was also one of the three reincarnated Rinpoches in the same family. At the age of two, he was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso. Soon Lhamo Thondup was renamed as Tenzin Gyatso. On February 5th 1940, the Central Government approved the request to exempt Lhamo Thondup from the lottery process to become the 14th Dalai Lama. Immediately at the age of six, he began his monastic education. Logic, medicine, Sanskrit grammar and fine arts were his major subjects and the minor subjects were astrology, composition, poetry, synonyms & drama. He was also trained by the highest monks in Lhasa. At the age of 15 in 1950, he was enthroned amidst the start of troubles with China, but continued to study until the age of 25.

The 14th Dalai Lama has made a number of statements with respect to the 15th Dalai Lama and made it difficult for a Chinese person to appoint the 15th Dalai Lama.
